The Ammergau Round

The Ammergau Round is a 104,4 Kilometer long road bike tour, which leads from Füssen around the beautiful Ammergebirge and inspires with nature highlights and sightseeing attractions on the roadside. The tour runs largely comfortably, but also offers a mountain rating shortly before the Tyrolean border.

During the Ammergau round, the racing cyclists pass through a dreamily beautiful natural landscape and can look forward to some remarkable sights such as the magnificent Wieskirche and the Linderhof Palace, which was considered the favorite refuge of fairytale king Ludwig II. The route also leads through the picturesque wood carving village of Oberammergau and along the Plansee, on which passenger ships operate in the summer, which also transport bicycles. A small mountain classification just before the Tyrolean border ensures that the sporting ambition at the Ammergau round is not neglected. Start and finish point of this road bike tour, for which about four hours should be planned, is The Füssener Tourist Information. Allgäu holidaymakers who travel by car can do so, for example, in the free parking lot „P1 “Festival square” in Kemptener Straße. From the Füssen railway and bus station you can reach the Tourist Information in around 2 Minutes on foot. It is recommended to complete the Ammergau Round between April and September.

The first part of the Ammergau round in the direction of Wieskirche runs partly on the renowned Bodensee-Königssee-Radweg, one of the most popular bicycle routes in Germany. After the racing cyclists have swung on their bike at the Tourist Information in Füssen, they first follow Sebastianstraße towards Schwangau. With a view of the Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein castles, it passes the Bannwaldsee and over the small village of Bayerniederhofen to Halblech and Trauchgau. In the further course of the tour, Unterreithen, Schober and Fronreiten are passed before Steingaden takes a detour to the famous Wieskirche. The house of worship is a rococo jewel and UNESCO World Heritage Site, which you should definitely look at from the inside. Morgenbach and Unterammergau in the picturesque Ammertal are subsequently road stations before the racing cyclists reach Oberammergau.

The wood carving village of Oberammergau has some attractions, so the cyclists should stay here quietly longer. Worth seeing here is the Passion Playhouse, in which all 10 Years of the Passion of Christ is re-enacted, the remarkable tinkering paintings on the facades of the house in the village as well as the Pilate House, where you can watch wood carvings in their artistic craft. The Ammergau Round continues to Linderhof Castle, the smallest of the three castles of Fairytale King Ludwig II. The castle and the accompanying castle garden are fantastically beautiful – a visit is definitely recommended. Shortly before the Tyrolean border awaits the racing cyclists then a crisp climb, which tests the strength endurance. Afterwards we walk comfortably along the shore of the Plansee. Between the “Forelle” and “Seespitze” sites, cyclists can visit here at Summer also a piece by ship and enjoy very special impressions. The last part of the tour leads through the Reuttener Talkessel and via Reutte, Mühl and Pflach the racing cyclists come past Pinswang and reach the Ulrichsbrücke, which they cross to reach the border to Füssen-Biegelwies. From here it leads the Tyrolean road back to the starting point.
