The Zirmgrat Round

The circa 28 Kilometer-long Zirmgrat round is an easy, cozy bike ride that once leads around this elongated high altitude train located southwest of Füssen. The cyclists drive here through a magnificent pre-Alpine landscape, along famous sights and excursion destinations such as the Lechfall, the forest experience center Ziegelwies and Germany’s highest castle ruins on the Falkenstein.

The bike ride is especially in spring and summer a real pleasure for all the senses. Since it hardly steeper passages have to be overcome, it is also suitable for children and seniors. Your starting point and destination is the Tourist Information in Füssen. The journey to Füssen is via the A7 Or the federal roads B16 and B17. Paid parking is located in the immediate vicinity of the Tourist Information in the car park P5 “City/ Sparkasse” is available. Alternatively, the free parking spaces in the parking lot are recommended P2 at the Federal Service Center for Ice Hockey, which 15 Minutes walk from the starting point of the tour. Travelers by public transport can reach the Tourist Information from the Füssen railway and bus station in circa 5 Minutes on foot. Cyclists who want to swim in picturesque Weißensee towards the end of the tour should not forget to bring swimwear.

After the cyclists have swung on their bike at the Füssener Tourist Information, they cross the Sebastianstraße and follow the Klosterstraße to the Spitalgasse. On this they reach the Theresienbrücke, which leads over the Lech. Then it goes right on the Tyrolean road and on a cycle path that leads past the Lechfall and the forest experience centre Ziegelwies (WEZ). The impressive natural spectacle at the Lechfall, where roaring water masses plunge over seven meters into the depth to enter the Lech gorge, can best be followed from the König-Max-Steg, which leads over the waterfall. In a niche above the clamb is the king bust of Maximilian II, the father of King Ludwig II and creator of Hohenschwangau Castle. Especially families with children are recommended a visit to the forest experience center Ziegelwies, which has numerous attractions for young and old. In the middle of beautiful nature, there are, among other things, exciting themed and educational trails, a large adventure playground and as an absolute highlight an imposing treetop trail that runs from treetop to treetop high above the earth. The WEZ is one of the most popular family excursion destinations in the region and wants to awaken an understanding of nature and the forest habitat in a fun way.

Shortly behind the main building of the WEZ, the cyclists have to turn right onto a gravel path that leads through a slightly wooded landscape to the Ulrichsbrücke. Here they travel a bit on Austrian soil and cycle through the picturesque Tyrolean Vilstal into the municipality of Vils. Behind the parish church it goes right, on the road “Untertor” over a bridge and then left on the Zirmenweg, which runs in the direction of Pfronten. On the Falkenstein, above Pfronten-Meilingen stands the impressive castle ruin Falkenstein, which is one of the most famous sights of the Allgäu due to its extraordinary altitude and historical importance. Fairytale King Ludwig II. They bought it at the beginning of the 80er-Jahre the 19. It was built in the century to make it a magnificent castle in the style of Neuschwanstein. Only his unforeseen death 1886 on Lake Starnberg prevented the realization of this project. A visit to the castle ruins is worthwhile just because of the magnificent views over the vast pre-Alpine country.

The Zirmgrat round continues over the Panoramaweg, the Achweg and the König-Ludwig-Weg to the Finstertal, which is populated by dense forest. Via the villages of Benken and Rossmoos, the cyclists finally reach Weißensee, whose circular path they follow clockwise. Directly on the northern lake route stands the worth seeing church of St. Walburga, whose magnificent high altar Domenicus Zimmermann – the creator of the famous Wieskirche – has designed. On warm days, the outdoor pool Weißensee invites you to plunge into the magnificent turquoise water of the lake and thus to procure a deserved cooling. Also possible here are leisurely rides by pedal or rowing boat, in who can enjoy fantastic views over the picturesque landscape with its meadows and mountains. The Weißensee circuit ends at a driveway on which you turn right. A little later, after the cyclists have passed a parking lot, they turn left to drive back to Füssen on a bike path from gravel. Via the Kemptener Straße and the Luitpoldstraße they finally return to the city centre for tourist information.
