The Gaichtpass-Oberjoch round

The 89,2 Kilometer-long Gaichtpass-Oberjoch-Runde is considered a racing bike classic and is ideal for getting to know the beautiful Allgäuer and Tyrolean mountains. The tour has two medium-heavy mountain stages at the Gaicht and Oberjoch passes, and allows for swimming fun in an Alpine lake on warm summer days.

Here you can both comfortably explore the Alpine foreland on low-traffic secondary roads and comfortable cycle paths, as well as test your sporting ambition on crisp climbs on the Alpine passes. The one presented here 89,2 Kilometer-long Gaichtpass-Oberjoch round offers a mixture of cozy sections of the track and two challenging climbs that require good condition. The tour impresses with magnificent landscape impressions in the Allgäu and in Tyrol, and during the summer months offers the opportunity to refresh yourself in between in the cool water of a bathing lake. Start and finish point of this tour, for which at least 4 Hours should be scheduled, is the Füssener Tourist Information in the city center. Allgäu travellers who travel by car can do so, among other things, in the parking lot P1 Parking place, which is not far from the starting point. If you travel by public transport, the Tourist Info can be reached from the Füssen railway and bus station in around 2 Minutes on foot. The Gaichtpass-Oberjoch round should be completed between April and October.

The road cyclists start at the Tourist Information and start from here in an easterly direction to cross the Lech. Then turn right in the direction of Füssen-Biegelwies and drive across the national border to Austria. The Gaichtpass-Oberjoch-Runde leads here first harmlessly lechaufwärts through a picturesque Alpine foreground. The villages Pinswang, Pflach and Reutte are way stations before the cyclists reach Weißenbach am Lech. Between Weißenbach and the idyllic Tannheim valley, the Gaichtpass – once a Römertrasse – is the first sporting challenge that demands good condition. Over the pass runs the Tannheimer Straße B199, On which there are always quite a lot of car and motorcyclists on the road. So some caution is required when ascending. Arriving at the Gaichtpass, a beautiful view of the Lechtal and the Tannheimer Valley offers.

Passing the Haldensee, the tour continues to Tannheim, the main town of the Tannheim valley. If you want to, you can take the mountain railway to the Neunerköpfle and enjoy an unforgettable view from above. Through the Tannheimer Valley, a trendy hiking and winter sports paradise, the tour continues to Schattwald back on German terrain. Before Oberjoch – Germany’s “highest Kirchdorf” – it goes uphill again before the cyclists pass Unterjoch and Wertach back to the Pre-Alpine country. On the Grüntensee there is then a rest on warm days to relax on one of the meadows here or to get a cooling in the lake. Via Nesselwang, Hertingen, Zell and Oberkirch it finally goes to the Weißensee, which belongs to the rurally shaped Füssen district of the same name. Here, too, there are quiet spots on the shores that are ideal for a picnic or some bathing fun. From the Weißensee the racing cyclists then drive back to the Füssen city centre.

The Gaichtpass Oberjoch round impresses with great landscape impressions and challenges ambitious racing cyclists with its two “mountain classifications”. Racers with good condition should not miss this tour on their Allgäu holiday.
