The Forggensee-Dampflok Round

The 111,1 Kilometer-long Forggensee-Dampflok round is a relatively easy road bike tour, which runs largely on old, abandoned railway paths through the beautiful Allgäuer Voralpenland and with its gentle climbs is well suited as preparation for challenging mountain stages.

The racing cycling area around Füssen in the Allgäu impresses with numerous great routes for every level of condition. Here are both leisurely tours on quiet side roads and comfortable cycle paths possible as well as strenuous mountain stages on the Alpine passes, which satisfy the sporting ambition. A charming and rather easy tour to curl up is the 111,1 km long Forggensee-Dampflok round, which leads mostly on old railway lines through the pre-Alpine country. On the way, the road cyclists pass the Forggensee, the largest lake in the Allgäu, on which they can also cover a piece along with a bike on a passenger ship towards the end of the tour during the summer months. In addition, the tour leads through the district-free city of Kaufbeuren, which is always worth a visit with its numerous attractions. The starting and finishing points of the Forggensee-Dampflok round, for which at least: 4 Hours must be planned, is the Füssener Tourist Information. Those who travel by car in the Allgäu can do so in the free parking lot P1 or in the car park P5 “City / Sparkasse” Travellers using public transport can reach the starting point of the tour from the Füssen railway and bus station in around 5 Minutes on foot. This road bike tour is best done between April and October.

The road cyclists start at the Tourist Information in an easterly direction, cross the Lech and drive to the shore of the Forggensee, which is the largest reservoir in Germany and the largest lake in the Allgäu. The water reaches its full height during the summer months and then blends perfectly into the surrounding Allgäu dream landscape. With a view of the water and the magnificent mountains, it goes for a while along the shore to the Roßhaupten dam, where the E-On hydroelectric power plant is located, in whose info centre you will learn much about the history and use of the Forggensee. Via Lechbruck am See the road cyclists reach Burggen, where with the Litzauer Schleife is the last unobstructed Lech section below the Forggensee.

Via Ingenried, the road bike tour leads through the idyllic Rothenbuch Forest and on, via Frankishofen and Helmishofen, to Kaufbeuren. Here are the racing cyclists on the former route of the 1922 Inaugurated local railway Kaufbeuren-Schongau. In Kaufbeuren it is worthwhile to get off the bike to visit some of the sights during a stroll through the old town. Especially the five-button tower - the landmark of the city -, the monastery Kaufbeuren, the witches' tower, the Neptune fountain and the time-honored town hall should be seen. There are also some very pretty churches here, especially the St. Dominic Church. Subsequently, the route of the Forggensee-Dampflok round leads back south, towards Füssen. Via Ebenhofen, the racing cyclists reach Marktoberdorf, from where they 1899 the local railway Marktoberdorf-Lechbruck, which leads it back to the Forggensee. As a reward for the tour, the cyclists can get here in summer along with a bike on a passenger ship, which brings them back to Füssen. Alternatively, it goes with the bike along the shore.

The Forggensee-Dampflok round promises very beautiful and varied holiday impressions and is wonderfully suitable for getting to know the picturesque Alpine forelands comfortably on the road bike.
