The Castle Round

The cross-border road cycling area around Füssen impresses with varied routes, a dream landscape and many sights on the roadside. For all those who want to enjoy some sightseeing on the road bike during their Allgäu holiday, the 70,8 km long castle round ideal. The tour leads along six interesting castle ruins and also offers a really crisp climb.

The 70,8 km long castle round is a short, sectional but quite demanding road bike ride, where you can get to know the “castle region” around Füssen wonderfully. It leads through the dreamlike pre-Alpine landscape, past six restored castle ruins. As a highlight awaits the road cyclists the steep climb to the castle ruin Falkenberg, the highest castle ruin in Germany. Start and finish point of this tour, for which about three hours should be planned, is the Tourist Information in Füssen. Who is with the car in the Allgäu holiday, for example, can do this in the car park P5 “City/ Sparkasse”, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the Tourist Information. From the Füssener railway and bus station it is only 2 Minutes walk to the starting point. The castle round should ideally be completed between April and September. In between, the cyclists pass by various stopping points.

The racing cyclists start at the Tourist Information and first drive straight on the Augsburger Straße until they turn in a roundabout towards hops on the lake. The hops district in Füssen impresses with its southern flair and the hop lake of the same name, which is one of the warmest and most beautiful pre-Alpine lakes. In hops, the racing cyclists drive up to the Burgruine Hopfen, the oldest stone castle of the Allgäu. Nowadays, it is primarily a popular destination for excursions because it offers a dream view of the Ammergau Alps and Tannheim mountains. The tour continues via Hopferau and Eisenberg to Zell, where there is a worth seeing castle museum, which has a lot of Fun facts about the castle ruins Hohenfreyberg and Eisenberg. Of course, the cyclists here in Zell can also make a detour to these castle ruins, which form a landscape-dominating castle ensemble.

As a result, the Burgen Round continues to Pfronten-Kreuzegg and Pfronten-Meilingen, where the crisp climb to the castle ruin Falkenstein is pending. Here the racing cyclists have to prove their strength endurance before they can look at Germany’s highest castle ruins. Due to its extraordinary altitude, Falkenstein Castle is one of the most popular sights in the Allgäu. On an observation platform you can enjoy a fantastic view of the vast pre-Alpine country. On the descent from Falkenstein, the racing cyclists keep left and drive over the Burgweg to Stoffelmühle. In Pfronten-Steinach we then head towards the Tyrolean village of Vils continue. About 60 meters above the charming Vilstal is here the castle ruin Vilsegg, which is between 1220 and 1230 was created.

As a result, the cyclists have the opportunity to return directly to Füssen via the Ulrichsbrücke. Alternatively, they travel along Musau, Unterlzen, Oberlzen and Lechaschau to Reutte, where the Burgenensemble Ehrenberg awaits the last castle ruin of the tour. Today, the Burgenensemble Ehrenberg is a world of experience that is a beautiful destination for the whole family. At the Ehenbichl the route makes a turn and leads over Reutte, Pflach and the Kniepass to the Gasthof Schluxen, from which it goes over the Fürstenstraße to Hohenschwangau. Here a visit to the world-famous royal castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau is very worthwhile. From Hohenschwangau are only now 5 km back to the starting point.
