The “Romantic Cycle Route”

The “Romantic Road Cycle Route” is an approx. 55,1 Kilometer long cycle route stage, which has a medium demand and runs from Füssen in the Allgäu to Steingaden and back again. On the way, the cyclists expect famous sights, such as the Royal Castles and the Rococo Jewel Wieskirche, as well as a dreamlike landscape to melt down.

All roads lead to Füssen – Bavaria’s highest city is a stage or destination for numerous renowned long-distance bike routes, including Romantische Straße, Germany’s oldest, most famous and most popular holiday road. The Romantic Road runs from Würzburg am Main, through picturesque towns and villages with predominantly medieval centers and scenic areas such as the Taubertal and Nördlinger Ries, up to the Allgäuer Königswinkel to Füssen. The ca. 424 km long cycle route Romantische Straße follows the course of the holiday road mainly on secondary roads and cycle paths. The last stage of the cycle route, from the Wieskirche near Steingaden to Füssen, is particularly charming and inspires with dreamlike landscape impressions and world-famous sights on the roadside. In order to get into the famous bike trail, the about 55,1 km long tour on the cycle path Romantische Straße, which runs from Füssen to Wieskirche and back. This tour lasts about two and a half hours and can be comfortably tackled by any cyclist with a bit of condition. But those who wish can also rent an e-bike in Füssen, where the pedal movement is supported by an electric motor. Start and finish point of the bike tour is the Tourist Information in Füssen.

The Romantic Road cycle path runs mostly flat over cycle paths, tarred dirt roads and secondary roads. The cyclists follow the signposted route and drive first from the Tourist Information in Füssen via Alterschrofen to Hohenschwangau. Here, the world-famous royal castles Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein tower in the midst of an idyllic mountain landscape. Those who wish can take a break to visit the magnificent buildings. This is possible except on certain public holidays daily in the form of a guided tour of about half an hour. The unforgettable impressions from the pompous world of the Bavarian fairy tale king Ludwig II. make such a visit highly worthwhile. Along picturesque villages such as Schwangau, Halblech, Trauchgau and Oberreithen, the tour continues until Steingaden in the so-called “Pfaffenwinkel”. Here stands the magnificently furnished in Rococo style pilgrimage church to the Wies, in short Wieskirche, which belongs to the Unesco World Heritage and is one of the most famous sights in Bavaria. The architecture and ornate interior design of the house of worship are of unique beauty and will delight not only church lovers.

The return route from Steingaden to Füssen initially runs on the same route as the outward route. At Halblech, however, you turn towards Forggensee to cycle a bit along the shore of the beautiful water. The largest lake in the Allgäu is actually a reservoir, but in the summer months it integrates perfectly into the surrounding dream landscape. From June to October, passenger ships operate several times a day on the lake, which also transport bicycles. They arrive at several stops on the shores, so that the cyclists can also change to one of the ships to get back to Füssen. Whether on the bike or by ship – the last part of the cycle path Romantic road delights again with magnificent landscape impressions and unforgettable views of the Allgäu mountains and the royal castles.
