Aggenstein and Breitenberg

The 13,2 km long summit hike to the 1986 Metre-high Aggenstein and the 1838 Meter-high Breitenberg is very demanding and therefore reserved for experienced mountain hikers with good condition, tread safety and vertigo freedom. These can look forward to a varied hike that leads through a beautiful mountain landscape and is crowned with breathtaking summit views over the vast pre-Alpine country.

This summit hike, which is classified as heavy, leads from the valley station of the Breitenbergbahn through the wild-romantic Reichenbachklamm to the Bad Kissinger Hütte and further over the striking Aggenstein to the Ostlerhütte on the Breitenberg. From there it goes down to the fall mill, from where one of the valley buses returns to the starting point. To get to Breitenberg you drive from Füssen on the B310 towards Weissensee / Pfronten. After driving through Weissensee, you reach a roundabout where you take the third exit towards Pfronten / Mitte. From here, the Breitenbergbahn in Pfronten-Steinach is signposted. Those who travel by public transport arrive from the Füssen railway and bus station by bus line 71 or 56 after Pfronten. After the hike, as mentioned, take the valley bus back to the valley station of the Reichenbergbahn. The departure times are from 26.05. until 21.10. daily 11.20, 14.20 and 16.20 Clock. For the 13,2 km long hiking tour, for which you have to plan at least seven hours, hiking shoes that enclose the ankles and have a good profile sole are recommended. If available, you should also take hiking sticks for additional stop. Some provisions of course also belong in the hiking backpack, although the tour leads past two cozy huts, where you can fortify yourself with food and drink.

The starting point of this charming but challenging hiking tour is Breitenberg in Pfronten-Steinach, which is a popular excursion destination in every season. In the warm months hikers, cyclists as well as dragon and paraglider pilots will find the best conditions before and in the cold season, the Breitenberg with its family ski area winter sports enthusiasts everything the heart desires. From the parking lot at the valley station you walk at the Bistro BBB and a small playground in the direction of the Reichenbachklamm. This wild romantic gorge, whose waterfall is very worth seeing, is crossed on a narrow climb, which leads secured in places through the rocky forest. Of course, the entire hiking tour is signposted by signposts. In the grip, red dots serve as markings, but these are not always easy to recognize. Once you have left the gorge behind you, you continue on a forest road to the Aggenstein ski lift, behind which you continue in the direction of Bad Kissinger Hütte and Aggenstein. Via the pasture area of the Pfrontener Hochalpe you can reach the Bad Kissinger Hütte, which pampers hungry hikers with delicious breadtimes and warm cottage dishes. With a view of the magnificent mountain world, you can linger here comfortably before continuing. Behind the hut begins the steep ascent to the 1986 meters high Aggenstein. Those who do not want to climb the summit continue to the ridge, from which you have a great view over the Breitenberg, and then descend into the saddle. Anyone who wants to reach the summit must pull themselves up by chains. In this context, safety of footsteps and freedom from dizziness are absolutely essential. On the Aggenstein you can expect a magnificent panoramic view over the vast pre-Alpine country, which you will not soon forget. The descent is very steep in places and leads over light debris, so that here too increased attention and safety of footsteps are necessary. Via the Pfrontener GEO-Path, where information boards convey all kinds of interesting facts about the geology of the region, it goes to the Ostlerhütte on the Breitenberg. The Ostlerhütte is located at a height of 1838 Meters and allows a magnificent panoramic view of the Pfronten Valley and the Allgäuer, Tyrolean and Swiss mountains. Also here you will of course get a delicious Bavarian bread time or a homemade cottage dish served. After the stop, you walk down a ridge path to the fall mill, from where you take the valley bus back to the valley station of the Breitenbergbahn. If you want to simplify this entire hiking tour, you already have the opportunity at the border hut at the Pfrontener Hochalpe to turn towards Ostlerhütte and cross below the Aggenstein to Breitenberg. Nevertheless, this variant of the hiking tour is still classified as medium-sized. After On the summit hike you can still sit comfortably in the beer garden of the BBB-Bistros and taste small snacks and a cool beer while enjoying the view of the Breitenberg and the Allgäuer mountains.
