The Salober Alps near Füssen
The Saloberalpe is a mountain located west of Füssen on the border with Austria. It stands in the immediate vicinity of the mysterious and beautiful Lake Alats and is a popular hiking destination throughout the year. On the mountain lies the hosted mountain hut Salober-Alm, from which you can enjoy magnificent views of the Tannheim mountains and the Allgäu Alps.
The Salober Alpine is a beautiful destination for easy and family-friendly hikes throughout the year. On the Salober Alps lead several charming paths. A popular route leads through the Faulenbach valley, past the picturesque and mysterious Alatsee and then up the mountain to the Salober Alps. This leisurely walk takes about three quarters of an hour and is also very suitable for families with children or dogs. From From Austrian Vils, the so-called “Burgenweg” leads to the Salober Alps. The rise begins approximately 200 meters in front of the St. Anna chapel and above it you also need about 45 Minutes to reach the rustic Salober-Alm. If you are in the mood for a longer, about three-hour hike, start a tour of the Salober Alps at the bathing place in the Füssen district Weißensee. From there it goes to the Alatsee and up to the Salober-Alm. Then you move on to the 1293 Meter-high Zirmgrat to Germany’s highest castle ruin Falkenstein. The exposed and beautiful location of this castle ruin, prompted 1883 King Ludwig II to buy them in order to have a magnificent fairytale castle in the style of Neuschwanstein built in their place. Initial plans for this construction project were quickly created, but it came to realization due to the death of the fairy tale king in the year 1886 never. Today, the castle ruins are mostly renovated and, above all, due to an observation platform in the castle interior, from which you can enjoy a unique view over the Alpine forelands to the high mountains, a very popular excursion destination. The Saloberalpe also has its charm in the cold season. After a wonderful winter hike through a snowy dream landscape, you can comfortably stop in the Salober Alps and strengthen and warm up there, before you drove back into the valley via a natural toboggan run. A popular hike to the Salober Alps, which starts at the legendary Alatsee, we now introduce you a little more in detail. Your starting point is the car park on the north shore of the Alatsee. Around this water, which is also called “bleeding lake” due to its slightly reddish shimmering water in special light conditions, many local myths and legends are entangled. The red coloration of the water is formed due to a rare purple sulfur bacteria layer in 15 meters depth. Above this layer, the water is oxygen-rich and the habitat of many fish, below the layer there is no oxygen and no life in the water. According to legends and myths, mythical creatures and monsters live on or in the Alatsee and rumors circulate that a gold treasure of the National Socialists, which had previously been stored in Neuschwanstein Castle, lies on its foundation. The legends and myths surrounding the lake meant that the water was already the scene of popular Allgäu crime. The Alatsee, beautifully embedded in the Allgäu Alps, is above all a picturesque mountain lake and a popular excursion destination. About one The gravel forest road, which is also suitable for strollers, can be reached from the shore of the lake up the Salober Alps. If you like it a bit more demanding, choose instead of the forest road the parallel Josephssteig – a steep trampling path – to reach the mountain. Along the way, you can expect a dreamlike view of the emerald water of the Alat Sea and the surrounding mountains. Before reaching the Salober Alps, a path to the so-called “four lake views” branches off. On a forest path you reach in about half an hour a dreamlike viewpoint, from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Weißensee, Hopfensee, Forggensee and the Bannwaldsee You can enjoy. Passing a picturesque alpine meadow, we then head to the Salober-Alm, which has a beautiful sun terrace and a children's playground with many play equipment. Here in this mountain hut you can enjoy homemade cakes, hearty Bavarian breadtimes and delicious Allgäuer hut dishes before going back to the starting point of this hike. Anyone who feels like it could also get around 2 Hours on to the castle ruin Falkenstein.
