The Königstraum Hike in the Allgäu

The walk "Königstraum" is an approx. 18 Kilometer long day tour that leads through the magnificent Allgäu mountain landscape to the castle ruin Falkenstein and to the viewpoint Vier-Seen-Bblick on the Salober. During the mountain tour “Königstraum” hiking friends get to know one of the most charming sights of the Allgäu with the castle ruin Falkenstein. The 13. Built during the Thirty Years' War, the facility was destroyed and is the highest castle ruin in Germany and closely connected to fairy tale king Ludwig II. The Bavarian king acquired the ruins 1883 and wanted to build in their place another dream castle in the style of Neuschwanstein. This dream, which gives the hiking tour its name, remained due to his unforeseen death 1886 Unfortunately unfulfilled. In the castle museum below the ruins you can see what this magnificent castle should have looked like. Start and finish point of the hike, for which around 7 Hours are to be planned, is the guest's house in the Vilstalstraße 2 in Pfronten-Ried. From Füssen you can reach Pfronten in a few minutes by car. Parking is available at Pfronten-Ried station.

You start at the guest’s house and first walk over the district of Meilingen to Falkenstein. Over lush green pasture areas and through shady mountain forest you climb up to the beautiful Mariengrotte and on to the castle ruin Falkenstein. From the castle, which is impressive because of its unique altitude, remains of the wall have been preserved and there is an observation platform from which a fantastic view over the pre-Alpine country offers countless mountains. Before continuing the hike, it is worth a visit to the castle museum below the ruins, which provides a lot of interesting information about the history of Falkenstein Castle and with pictures and models. In the further course, the route leads over the “dragon ridge” and you walk over the ridge of the long mountain to the viewpoint Vier-Seen-Bblick on the Salober. Omnipresent beautiful views of the wide landscape and the soothing mountain air make the tour a real joy. The Four Lake View is so named because from here you see the Weißensee, Hopfensee, Forggensee and Bannwaldsee. During this tour, do not forget to capture the great panoramas in photos. The Salober Alm is open daily during the summer season, except on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The hike will now take you past the ruins of Vilsegg Castle, from which the mighty mountain fried is still preserved, to the Tyrolean village of Vils. From here you walk relaxed along the Vils back to the starting point. If you already feel your tired legs, you can also get back to Pfronten from Vils by the off-road train.
