The high plate in Buching, also known as Ammergauer Hochplatte, is a 2082 Meter high mountain in the Ammergau Alps. The striking summit, which is clearly superior to its surroundings, is a popular excursion destination for hikers and ski tourers.
The high plate stands about seven kilometres east of Füssen and clearly towers above its neighboring peaks, such as the Geiselstein. The wide mountain of Wettersteinkalk offers fantastic views of the surrounding, magnificent landscape from its summit and is a popular destination for charming mountain hikes. The easiest way to the high plate leads from the cozy, privately managed Kenzenhütte at an altitude of 1300 meters, over the Scheinbergalpe and then through Karst Gelände from the east to the summit. This mountain tour takes about two and a half hours. A slightly more challenging but also more attractive tour, which we will introduce in more detail below, runs from the Kenzenhütte via the Gumpenkar and the west side to the summit. Some passages of this route are equipped with wire rope securing devices. A tour on the Ammergauer Hochplatte promises varied pleasure hiking through a picturesque landscape, along lush green alpine meadows and deep forests.
Probably the most charming and attractive route to the high plate starts at the Wankerfleck, which is located at an altitude of about 1140 meters in the Ammergau Alps. The best way to get to the Wankerfleck is by the Kenzenbus, which takes you there every full hour from Halblech through the Halblech valley. Instead of using the bus, this 12 Kilometer long distance also very well with the bike. Directly by car you can not reach the Wankerfleck, because it is centrally located in the nature reserve of the Ammergau Alps and only forest roads lead to it, which are closed to normal vehicle traffic. At the Wankerfleck awaits a picturesque landscape with extensive alpine meadows surrounded by dense forests. From here, great are the views of the Geiselstein, whose striking northeast view immediately catches the eye. The mountain tour on the high plate then also runs directly under the steeply rising rock walls of the hostage stone, which represents a paradise for climbers. They are waiting at the Matterhorn. Ostallgäus, as the Geiselstein is also called, many different climbing routes of different characters and levels. After reaching the saddle at the foot of the Geiselstein south ridge, this mountain tour leads you on slightly sloping paths into the beautiful Gumpenkar, which impresses with imposing boulders. Here the landscape shows itself from a particularly magnificent side and often encounter a chamois that graze in this picturesque mountain world. Continue through the so-called “window”, a natural rock gate, into the saddle between high plate and crow. The further course of this mountain tour allows pure pleasure hiking through one of the most magical areas of the Ammergau Alps. However, a narrow ridge passage requires treadability and freedom from dizziness over a short distance. Afterwards you have reached the summit of the high plate and can enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding dream landscape. After you have sufficiently enjoyed the magnificent views and rested a little, the descent follows. This leads past the Gamsangerl, over an elevated area densely covered with mountain pines, down to the Kenzenhaus, which extends at an altitude of about 1300 meters are located. In this rustic, privately managed mountain hut you have the opportunity to strengthen yourself with delicious Allgäuer hut dishes and hearty breadtimes. Once upon a time, the popular fairy tale king Ludwig II, who had the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle built, was often a guest in the Kenzenhaus. Overall, you need for this mountain tour about 5 hours. Except for the climb over the window, which is secured in places with wire ropes and requires safety, this hike is relatively easy. The beautiful landscape and the fantastic view that awaits you on the summit of the high plate make this mountain tour a real highlight.
The high plate can also be easily reached from the Ammerwald in Reutte, Austria. At Hof Ammerwald this tour starts, which initially runs very comfortably before the path to a varied climb changes. This leads one to the Wild Alpine, a 1720 Metre-high mountain in the Bavarian Alps, which is less well-known and is usually only visited by locals. Here you can already enjoy beautiful views. As a result, the route becomes a bit more demanding and here and there safety and vertigo are required. However, all somewhat more dangerous places are sufficiently secured with wire ropes. After about two and a half hours you reach the top of the plate. The descent takes place through the already introduced "window". Instead of going west to the Kenzenhaus, the route runs in the opposite direction, down a shady slope and then back to the starting point on the climb path.
The Ammergauer Hochplatte is a really beautiful mountain in the vicinity of Füssen, which allows a varied mountain tour through a dream landscape.
