Following in the footsteps of King Ludwig II.

In the beautiful foothills in the Allgäu you can walk royally in the footsteps of Ludwig II, because the former fairy tale king was, like his parents Queen Marie and Maximilian II, an enthusiastic hiker who liked and often explored the magical nature around the city on foot.

In Füssen you not only walk along the world-famous Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles in the footsteps of Ludwig II. The fairy tale king and all members of his family were nature-loving hikers who were constantly on the road in the mountains around Füssen. Especially the Tegelberg and the imposing Säuling, the guardian of the Allgäu, were popular destinations of the royal family. Those who want to hike on royal tracks will find attractive routes from easy to challenging around Füssen. A dreamlike landscape and numerous sights can be discovered everywhere. For example, on the Tegelberg Round, which leads past the Tegelberg House, once a popular destination of the fairy tale king. Along this route is the Berggasthaus Bleckenau, which King Maximilian II built for his wife Queen Marie. Royal hiking also offers the Three Castle Round, on the side of whose path you can see all three castles here in Füssen: The landmark of the city, the High Castle as well as the two magnificent castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Rather experienced hikers are recommended the Zirmgrat stage, which leads, among other things, to Falkenstein Castle, Germany’s highest castle ruin. Three-lock round

These 14,6 km-long route offers great experiences in all seasons, but it is especially beautiful in autumn, when nature is wrapped in a colorful dress. Many sightseeing highlights can be discovered here on the roadside and fantastic views are of course also guaranteed. Start at the Tourist Information in Füssen and from there continue over the Lechhalde and Theresienbrücke to the Calvary Mountain, from where you can enjoy great views. Along the picturesque Schwansee you walk on to the world-famous dream castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Further highlights on the stage are the impressive Lechfall and the idyllic Faulenbacher valley. Finally, there is the Hohe Schloss, which sits majestically over the old town of Füssen.

Calvary Mountain Round

Also on this 8,1 km One walks in the footsteps of King Ludwig II, because on the Calvary he liked and often stayed – last 1886, in his year of death. This is also started by Tourist Information in Füssen. On the ascent to the Calvary you pass many small chapels that address the Passion of Jesus. On the top of the mountain you get fantastic views over the old town of Füssen and the Allgäuer Königswinkel. On the way back you will pass the idyllic Schwansee and the scenic Schwanseepark, where many rare flowers bloom in the warmer months. Via an interesting trail in the forest experience centre Ziegelwies and past the Lechfall, you will then return to the Tourist Information in Füssen.

Tegelberg Round

A great hike with many highlights awaits you on the 17,2 km long Tegelberg round. However, it is more suitable for experienced hikers with good condition, as it is already a good bit uphill. Start at the valley station of the Tegelbergbahn via the cultural path “Schutzengelweg”, on which showboards explain the culture and history of the region, up to the mountain station of the Tegelbergbahn. The next stop is the Tegelberghaus, once a royal hunting house and the popular residence of Ludwig II. On the nature trail Ahornreitweg you go to the Berggasthaus Bleckenau, which Maximilian II had built for his wife. Over the Marienbrücke, which offers magnificent views, you then walk to Neuschwanstein Castle, where this route ends.

Zirmgrat round

These 12,8 km The route leads to the castle ruin Falkenstein, which King Ludwig, as already mentioned, had done very well. From the outdoor pool in Weißensee it goes to the Falkenstein. This and later also the Zirmgratweg offer wide views over the Allgäu to the Zugspitze. Over the cozy Saloberalm, which invites to rest and strengthen with Allgäuer treats, you descend to the legendary Alatsee. Then we return to Weißensee.
