Forggensee Round

The approximately 30 Kilometer long Forggensee round is a great bicycle tour for connoisseurs, families and e-bike riders, which leads around the largest lake in the Allgäu and inspires with magnificent views of the mountains. You do not always cycle directly along the Forggensee shore, but also through small hamlets and villages, so that a lot of variety is provided. In addition to dreamlike landscape impressions and great views of the mountains of the Allgäus, this bike tour also offers in summer the opportunity to take a cruise on the Forggensee. From June to mid-October, two passenger ships operate several times a day on this reservoir, which only has the full water level in summer. At eight stops along the lake, you can board one of these ships along with a bicycle. In addition, on warm days, of course, the opportunity to swim in the Forggensee and treat yourself to a welcome cooling in between. The start and finish point of the Forggensee Round is the boat port in Füssen, where parking is available. From the Füssener railway and bus station you need about 10 Minutes to the starting point of this bicycle tour.

The Forggensee is with its surface of 15,2 kilometers the largest lake in the Allgäu and the fifth largest lake in Bavaria. It is also the largest reservoir in Germany. It lies in a basin which after the last ice age was still filled by a larger, natural lake and was between 1950-1954 created. The Forggensee serves the power generation, the flood protection at the Lech and as a head reservoir of the low water elevation for the hydropower plants in the area. The continuously signposted bike ride runs clockwise around the lake. From the boat port in Füssen you first cycle along the Weidachstraße and then turn right in the direction of the Festspielhaus. About the small Towns Ehrwang, Osterreinen and Dietringen can be reached Rosshaupten, where the dam of the Forggensee is located. Here is a detour to the nearby info center in the E.ON hydropower plant Roßhaupten, which is operated daily by 8 up to 20 Clock open and offers a lot of information about the use of the Forggensee and hydropower in general. As a result, the tour runs a bit uphill until shortly before the picturesque Illasbergsee. Here, shortly before this lake, is the Panoramastadl, a rustic inn that invites you to a cozy stop at food and drink and from its terrace you can enjoy a magnificent view over the lake and the magnificent Allgäu mountains.

Freshly strengthened and rested, you then cycle over Kniebis further to the idyllic, mostly surrounded by forest and lean lawn Lake Hegratsrieder, where you can bathe on warm days. Then the bike ride runs, between green meadows and forests, on low-traffic economic routes to the village of Brunnen, which belongs to Schwangau. After crossing a small bridge you reach Waltenhofen. In Brunnen or here in Waltenhofen there is the possibility to go along with the bike on one of the passenger ships and take part in an unforgettable cruise on the Forggensee. The views from the ship to the mountains, the Neuschwanstein castles and Hohenschwangau and the old town of Füssen are simply magnificent. In Waltenhofen is the worth seeing parish church of St. Maria and Florian, which is located on one of the first churches of the Allgäu from the 8. The century goes back. The beautiful equipment, especially the high altar with life-sized saint statues, make a visit to this church very worthwhile. Through the village of Horn and over the wild romantic Lech you finally cycle back to Füssen to the boat port.
