As the cradle of European lute and violin making, Füssen has acquired a special significance in the history of music. In year 1562 The first lute-making guild in Europe was founded here. Since 2003 The annually changing motto of Füssen’s outstanding position in the lute and violin making.
This year the motto at the festival is multi-layered “Power”. It reminds me of the year 1313, than the power relations in feet for almost 500 Years have been set and thus the history of the city has been significantly shaped. At that time Emperor Henry VII pledged. the right to rule over feet to the Augsburg bishop, in return to be provided by this rider and horse for an upcoming Italian campaign. However, since the Emperor died shortly after this agreement, the pledge was never redeemed and Füssen remained under the rule of the Augsburg bishops. Füssen could thus never become a free imperial city.
