At the approx. 13 Kilometer-long King's Castle Round you walk in the footsteps of fairytale King Ludwig II and get a taste of the Lechweg, one of the most attractive long-distance hiking trails in Europe. During the tour you can expect numerous scenic and cultural highlights, such as the imposing Lechfall and the world-famous Königsschlosss Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau.
The Royal Castle Round is one of the so-called Lech loops, which are extensions and enrichments of the 125 km long Lechwegs. Like the long-distance trail itself, which follows the course of the wild river through three regions and two countries, the Lech loops have a direct connection to the Lech and are subject to the same quality standards. As “Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe”, the long-distance hiking trail promises, among other things, excellent walkable paths, attractions on the side of the path and first-class signage of the highest hiking pleasure. The Royal Castle Round, which has a length of approx. 13 Kilometers and an easy claim is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Lechweg, because it offers a successful mix of landscape and cultural features. The starting and finishing point of the round trip, for which about six hours are planned, is the Lechfall in Füssen.
The imposing natural spectacle at Lechfall, in which raging masses of water plunge into the depths to enter the Lech gorge, is a first highlight of this truly royal round trip. First, follow the beautiful turquoise-colored Lech upriver before strolling through a pretty alluvial forest to the forest experience center Ziegelwies, a great family destination in Füssen. On the adjoining mountain forest path you will reach the Alpenrosenweg, along which once King Maximilian II, the father of Ludwig II, planted a sea of alpine roses for his wife Queen Marie. The path leads to the Alpsee, one of the cleanest lakes in Germany and former Favorite bathing lake of Ludwig II. The waters located in the middle of the picturesque Allgäu mountain landscape enjoy great popularity in summer for swimming and on its shore is the Museum of the Bavarian Kings, which has a lot of background information about the Bavarian kings and their castles.
This is followed by a detour to the Marienbrücke, from where you can admire the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle up close. Afterwards you will cross the wild romantic Pöllat gorge with its high rock walls and rushing waterfalls. At the plaster mill you leave the Pöllat in the direction of Hohenschwangau and hike up to the castle of the same name. Hohenschwangau Palace opposite Neuschwanstein is a romantic residential palace in which Maximilian II, Queen Marie and Ludwig II. They spent much of the year. The round continues over the benzene head to the picturesque Schwansee, an ideal place for a small rest in the countryside. Then there is a short climb on the Füssener Kalvarienberg, which is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the region. Enjoy the view of the roofs of Füssen and the meadows, lakes and mountains of the Königswinkel.
From Calvary it goes along a crossroads at various station chapels to the Frau-am-Berg church, from which it is only a stone's throw to the Lechfall. After a good six hours, a dreamlike hike ends, which can be described as a sightseeing tour at its finest and which offers a wealth of unforgettable holiday impressions.
