The Weißensee in Füssen

In and around the Allgäu town of Füssen you will find many picturesque lakes with clean, crystal clear waters, which lie in the middle of a wonderful nature between magnificent peaks. One of them is the Weißensee, which offers plenty of leisure opportunities at any time of year and is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.

The White Sea has a length of about 2,2 kilometres and a circumference of 6,1 kilometers. It is located on the northern edge of the Alps, very west of the Füssen area. Its name probably comes from the deposited lime, which is responsible for the white shimmering appearance of the lake. The up to 25 Metre deep Weißensee has been heard since 1928 The town of Füssen. Especially for hikers, the Weißensee has a lot to offer. The best hiking trails lead here through a dreamlike natural landscape. The classic is the Weißensee circuit, which can also be easily mastered by untrained hikers in one and a half to two hours. At the outdoor pool in Weißensee this circular trail begins, which then runs east below the Seegasthof Weißensee. Later it goes through an idyllic forest landscape, where picturesque streams flow. On the lake you will find swans, hooded scuba divers, bloated chickens and other waterfowl. In the face of the mountains you walk on the Weißensee through an intact flora and fauna. The so-called “Törle” and the Hugo Ludwig Bridge are Highlights on the second part of the Weißensee circuit. A hike on the Weißensee can also be wonderfully combined with a detour to the nearby Alatsee. This beautiful mountain lake is associated with many myths and legends and was already the scene of popular Allgäu crime crime. The romantic lake can be located within about 30 Walk for minutes. If you want, you can then hike up to the Salober-Alm, a popular mountain hut that pampers its guests with hearty breadtimes and delicious cottage dishes. The Weißensee is also very suitable as a starting point for a hike to the castle ruins Hohenfreyberg and Eisenberg. These two castles are real sights. Hohenfreyberg in particular is one of the most beautiful castles in Bavaria. Fantastic views over the Allgäuer Königswinkel with its castles, mountains and lakes are guaranteed from the castle ruins. Whether simply a circumnavigation of the water, or a hike to other attractive destinations - Wanderers find best here on Weißensee conditions and can enjoy the dreamlike landscape of the Allgäus with all the senses.

The picturesque Weißensee with its clean water and unconsumed nature around it is also a real paradise for anglers. Very many fish species are native to the waters, including pikes, rigs, white fish, carp, eels, trout and charcoal. You can fish here with up to two hand fishing – either from the boat or from the shore. All baits, except living ones, are allowed. There is a catch limit for pikes, salmonids, carp and tench, and there is no catch limit for other fish species. Anglers will hardly find a better ambience for their hobby than the dreamlike Weißensee. The fishing season runs here until the end of October.

A little later, when the lake is frozen over, and the Allgäu is wrapped in a white color dress, the Weißensee becomes a popular meeting point for skating. The Allgäu cult sport of ice stick shooting is also enjoyed on the lake. The Füssen experts of the sport like to teach the tourists this. The hiking trails around the lake are cleared in winter and invite you to explore the picture-book-like snow landscape around Füssen. Many of the mountain trails are also walkable in the cold season. They lead, for example, to Falkenstein, the Alatsee or to cozy mountain huts, such as the Salober-Alm or the revolving hut.
