Füssen is surrounded by a dreamlike landscape with lush meadows, picturesque waters and magnificent mountains, which is partly already wrapped in a white color dress during Christmas. On numerous paths you can take tranquil winter hikes, where you can reach beautiful sights such as the royal castles or secluded places, which are ideal for enjoying the magic of the cold season. The historical old town of Füssen It turns into a cuddly sea of lights during Christmas. Along the narrow, winding alleys, festively lit and decorated small shops invite you to stroll and cozy cafes and restaurants attract with all kinds of Allgäuer delicacies. During a walk through the old town you will discover numerous historical buildings such as Gothic houses and old churches, which testify to the eventful history of the city on the Lech, which dates back to the Middle Ages. A look into the churches is especially worthwhile in the run-up to Christmas, as then there are very interesting Allgäuer cribs on display, which give an impression of the regional craftsmanship.
The city of Füssen presents itself particularly romantically on the second and third weekend of Advent, when the Christmas market opens its doors in the baroque Klosterhof St. Mang. At festively lit stalls, which are modeled on the medieval Füssen house facades, there are then craft products, crafts, gifts in all price ranges and much more to discover. Of course, the culinary delights are not neglected: Whether sweets such as Christmas cookies, apple strudel and crepes or hearty delicacies such as sheep noodles and herbs – a large selection of palate delights is provided on the Füssener Adventsmarkt. Music bands, singers and dance groups perform a Christmas entertainment program on the Klosterhofbühne, while you have the opportunity to drink a mulled wine and warm up a little in the cold temperatures. Very atmospheric Advent and Nikolaus markets also take place in the neighboring municipality of Schwangau in December. Amb 1. December of 14 up to 20 Clock invite festively decorated wooden stalls in the middle village to try various treats at the Culinary Nikolausmarkt. Here the food and drink are in the foreground, but of course there is also a Christmas program with atmospheric music and much more. In the evening, Nicholas comes and distributes gifts to the children. From 6. - 8. December and December 13. - 15. December it is Christmas romance pure around Castle Bullachberg. In the idyllic park on Schlossberg, visitors can expect stalls with regional craftsmanship, delicious delicacies and of course a lot of Christmas spirit. The little ones are allowed on 6. In December, we look forward to the visit of Nicholas and on all days to performances of a Puncherletheater. Even more Christmas spirit and romance are then available at the “Schwangau Christmas magic” from 21. - 23. December on and in the Schlossbrauhaus. Here many Schwangau musicians and chapels perform and there is a varied children's program as well as many stalls with crafts and treats. In the evening, the Christ Child appears with his angels and conjures a ray in the face of the little ones.
Romantic feelings and unforgettable impressions during a stay in Füssen during Christmas time promise a visit to the world-famous fairytale castle Neuschwanstein. Now in December, this magnificent building, reminiscent of an imposing medieval castle from the outside, is not as crowded as in summer. Neuschwanstein Castle, between 1869 and 1886 commissioned by the fairy tale king Ludwig II. built, has magnificent halls equipped with all kinds of art treasures, gold and velvet. It is considered a symbol of romance around the world and even served as an inspiration to Disney Studios for their Sleeping Beauty Castle. Every year, more than one million people from all over the world come to Neuschwanstein and marvel at the beauty and splendor of the castle. Neuschwanstein Castle can be reached very well from Füssen on a pleasant winter walk. Also worth seeing is the neighboring Hohenschwangau residential palace, where the fairy tale king spent much time in his childhood and youth.
