The ruins of Hohenfreyberg and Eisenberg

The castle ruins Hohenfreyberg and Eisenberg form a widely visible castle group north of Pfronten (ca. 15 Min. from Füssen), in the southern Allgäu. The two castles, which were destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and later renovated, are certainly among the most beautiful in Bavaria.

Hohenfreyberg Castle was built in the style of a high medieval high castle and is one of the last major castle new buildings of the Middle Ages in Germany. It became the beginning of 15. Built in the century by Friedrich von Freyberg. Towards the end of the Thirty Years' War, the castle belonging to Tyrol at that time was set on fire so that it could not fall into the hands of the Protestant army intact. Later, it turned out that this measure was pointless, as the attackers changed their march route.

The slightly higher Burg Eisenberg is older than Hohenfreyberg Castle. She became ca. 1315 laid out by the noblemen of Hohenegg and it is a mantle wall castle, where the ring wall leads around the entire castle like a shield. During the Thirty Years' War, she shared the fate of neighboring Hohenfreyberg Castle. In the 80er-Jahren In the last century, the castle was extensively renovated by the municipality of Eisenberg. The structure of the original castle rooms and buildings is clearly recognizable again today.

Both castle ruins are now popular excursion destinations. The villages Zell or Eisenberg offer themselves as a starting point for a hike to the castle ruins. From them you can enjoy beautiful views over the surrounding landscape and mountains. The visit of the castles is possible at any time independently, but also castle tours, especially for children, are offered.
